The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Georgia ACT, and the Georgia Tech School of City and Regional Planning hosted a reception in March that featured two outstanding housing experts examining the increasing hardships faced by low income renters. Dr. Matthew Desmond shared findings from his book on the consequences of evictions, once common outcome faced by cost burdened households. Dr. Dan Immergluck highlighted the rapid decline in affordable housing stock in the southeast and its implications.
Matthew Desmond is a MacArthur Fellow, the John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Social Sciences at Harvard University, and co-director of the Justice and Poverty Project. He is the author of hte new book “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City.” Dan Immergluck is a professor in the Georgia Tech School of Cioty and Regional Planning, where he conducts research on housing and real estate markets, mortgage finance and foreclosures, community reinvestment and fair lending, enighborhood change, and related public policy. Dr. Immergluck has authored four books, hismost recening being, “Preventing the Next Mortgage Crisis: The Meltdown, the Federal Response, and the Future of Housing in America,” was published in 2015.
